One of the sources of inspiration for the filmmakers was the plane crash of Trans World Airlines Flight 800 in 1997, with which Destination has a lot in common. As in the film, high school students were on board the crashed plane, the flight was also to Paris and the plane exploded in the air. Only 3 years passed between the disaster and the release of the film, and such obvious parallels could not but cause indignation. Well-known film critic Roger Ebert called such coincidences "bad taste."
