Jack Pearson

Oh man, Jack is that huge, warm, slightly chaotic heart-of-the-family dad who somehow makes grilled cheese feel like a life lesson — and yes he makes pancakes like it’s a sacred ritual. He’s brave and steady but also wildly impulsive at times (like the kind of guy who will fix a roof at midnight because why not?). Deep down there’s this stubborn optimism and a lot of old-school pride, but he also has tiny, soft openings where he spills his feelings and then gets embarrassed about it. He’s the guy you trust to save Thanksgiving and then cry in the car afterwards, which is both ridiculous and perfect. He can be a bit overbearing but in that lovable way where you forgive him immediately.

Randall Pearson

Randall is the over-prepared, hyper-organized fixer who tries to make everything measurable — lists, color-coded calendars, emergency plans — but then somehow will blindside you with a spontaneous, heartfelt speech. He’s ambitious and responsible and carries the weight of wanting to do everything right, which makes him fierce and sometimes unbearably anxious (also he will absolutely run five errands before breakfast). There’s a seriousness about identity and legacy that drives him, yet he has this goofy side that pops out at the worst moments and it’s adorable. He’s the glue and the over-achiever and also the guy who will call three therapists in one week because he’s not sleeping.

William Hill

William is quietly magnetic, the handful of wisdom and humor that sneaks up on you — storyteller, survivor, someone who knows how to hold a complicated silence. He’s lived hard and learned harder, which makes him patient but also full of surprising little rebellions (like an unexpected joke or a silly nickname that sticks). There’s this deep tenderness in him, the kind that teaches without lecturing; he can be funny and fierce and then suddenly unbearably tender. He’s humble in the way real people are humble — not fake humble, just worn-in and honest — and you want to sit and listen to his stories for hours.

Beth Pearson

Beth is this ferocious, brilliant force — disciplined, insanely talented (like she built whole careers with grit), and almost fiercely private about how much she feels things. She’s a perfectionist with choreography and also this hilarious, barbed sense of humor that will roast you and then make you tea five minutes later. Rebecca is the dramatic, warm, slightly theatrical matriarch who knows how to light up a room with a song or a sharp remark; she’s full of songbook charm and complicated softness. She can be loving and ambitious and also sort of stubbornly stuck in her own version of the past, which makes her real and messy and human. She’s protective, a little controlling sometimes (don’t sit too close to her piano, or maybe do — she’ll tell you stories), and secretly a huge romantic who hoards tiny keepsakes like a pro. She’s funny and infuriating and deeply devoted, and you can almost hear showtunes when she walks into a family dinner.

Kate Pearson

Kate is big-hearted and battling this long-running argument with herself about confidence, weight, and who she wants to be — so she’s fragile in one moment and fiercely determined the next. She loves singing and sometimes the stage is the 30-second magic where she is unshakable, which is wildly inspiring because she’s otherwise shy and easily wounded. She’s maternal in a startling way (pets, plants, people — she collects them), obsessed with certain comfort foods and guilty pleasures, and also stubbornly refuses to let herself stay down for long. She’s messy, relatable, stubbornly loyal, and will absolutely demolish a cake and then feel triumphant and guilty at the same time.

Kevin Pearson

Kevin is the charming, flippant actor who will make you laugh and then call you at 3 a.m. crying about nothing — he is very good at looking put together and very bad at letting people know when he’s falling apart. He craves applause and approval but also has surprising, quiet decency; he’s an idiot in public and a softie in private (yes both), and he bounces between swagger and insecurity like it’s his day job. He’s impulsive, hilarious, sometimes infuriatingly self-centered, and yet he’ll show up for family in ways that actually matter. He collects regrets and baseball caps, tells terrible jokes, and occasionally does something deeply brave when you least expect it.

Toby Damon

Toby is the awkwardly honest, tender-hearted jokester who somehow says the worst thing at the best time and then apologizes profusely (it’s his whole vibe). He’s goofy and supportive and struggles with darkness but is relentlessly loyal — like a human weirdly specific comfort blanket. He loves lists and small projects, is emotionally very loud but sometimes physically slouches through things, and has this stubborn sweetness that makes you want to hug him even when he’s being an idiot. He’s compassionate, a little crude in a lovable way, and absolutely would be the person to throw a themed party at 2 a.m. and then bring you soup the morning after.
