Saul is the sort of brilliant, half-mad theoretician who always looks like he’s got one foot in another dimension — in the best way possible. He’s obsessive, obsessive in a lovable and slightly terrifying kind of way, always circling a problem until it caves in or he does; also he keeps a mug with a crack in it that he insists is fine even though it sloshes coffee everywhere. He can be sarcastic and a little aloof but there’s this stubborn, weird morality underneath that makes him actually try to fix things, not just prove them wrong. Oh and he apparently hates parties yet will show up early and rearrange the furniture like a maniac — it doesn’t make sense, which is why he’s fun.

Thomas Wade

Thomas is the smooth, buttoned-up strategist who says sensible things and then executes them with unnerving calm, like a chess player three moves ahead and also slightly bored. He’s pragmatic, sharp, loves policies and memos, but don’t mistake him for dry — there’s a dry wit that sneaks out when you least expect it, and he’ll smile at you with terrible timing. Has this annoying habit of making a plan and then getting oddly sentimental about the people who get dragged into it, which is kind of sweet? Also, he drinks tea like a monk except when he’s stressed and then it’s instant coffee and muttered curses, very human.

Auggie Salazar

Auggie is pure chaotic heart — an engineer with grease under his nails and a grin that says “we’ll fix it, I swear” even if the thing is on fire. He’s loud, warm, loyal to the point of reckless courage, the guy who will improvise a spaceship out of duct tape and bad ideas and somehow make you believe it’ll fly (maybe it won’t, but he’ll make it fun). He collects tiny stickers from places he’s never been? That’s probably not true, but he definitely has a notebook full of scribbles and terrible cartoons of colleagues; also loves salsa music but insists he can’t dance, which is a lie.

Jin Cheng

Jin Cheng is steady, methodical, the backbone type — you give him a complex equation or a wobbling reactor and he will calmly stare it into submission while humming to himself, which is both eerie and comforting. He’s disciplined, polite to a fault, and people think he’s cold until he makes an unexpectedly kind gesture and you realize he’s been keeping score of everyone’s small disasters forever. He loves tea rituals and also hoards novelty socks like a secret hobby, so don’t be fooled by the stoic face. There’s a tiny streak of stubborn romanticism in him too, which makes him quietly dangerous in a “won’t let go” way.

Da Shi

Da Shi is the big-hearted, blunt ex-cop/detective vibe who solves things with instincts, a throwaway one-liner, and an appetite for terrible fast food — honestly, the man can read a room and a person and a spreadsheet in the same breath. He’s loud, messy, unafraid to say what everyone else is thinking, but he’s also the kind of person who will sit with you in silence and then fix your life without asking for thanks. Has a weirdly soft spot for tiny animals and conspiracy theories he’ll roll his eyes at later; contradiction is his aesthetic. Also he smokes too much, laughs too loudly, and somehow always finds the last donut.
