Meet the characters from Better Things

Max

Max is the eldest kid who’s equal parts sardonic and secretly mushy. She says the most cutting things but will also bring you soup when you’re sick (and then deny she cares). Total pop-culture radar — quotes weird lines from old movies and has a playlist for every mood, though she pretends she doesn’t listen to sad songs. She’s messy in the best way: impulsive, sharp, dramatic, and kind of an accidental philosopher sometimes. Also, she probably has a terrible eyeliner technique and is extremely proud of it.

Duke

Duke is the kid who notices everything — like, everything — and then obsesses over one tiny detail until you’re convinced it’s a clue to the universe. He’s earnest and a little awkward, full of surprising tenderness (he’ll hug you out of nowhere and act like it’s no big deal). Has weird hobbies? Yes — builds improbable contraptions or makes sound effects for fun, could be into insects or model rockets, your call. He says blunt, hilarious one-liners without realizing they’re devastatingly true. Also somehow both a peacekeeper and a secret chaos agent; contradicts himself constantly, which is adorable.

Frankie

Frankie is the entire show wrapped into one exhausted, beautiful human — fierce, funny, worn-out, and unknowably soft under that tough exterior. She’s a single mom and an actor, juggling everything with dry humor, a little profanity, and a constant low-level panic that she hides with sarcasm. Unapologetically messy in love and life, she makes impulsive decisions and then calmly explains them like it’s a life lesson. She is tender with her kids in the way only a parent who knows too many hard things can be — protective but not clingy, loving but real. Side note: she probably drinks too much coffee, listens to old soul records, and can ice a cake badly but somehow it tastes amazing.

Sam

Sam is the quietly intense middle kid who reads everything around her like it’s a secret code. She’s sardonic but soft when it counts, with an awkward sense of humor that lands exactly when you least expect it. Obsessive about something obscure (stickers? conspiracy podcasts? very specific vintage tees) and very private, but will let you into her world if you’re patient. She often seems older than she is, brooding and precise, yet she still falls apart over tiny embarrassments — which is kind of the best. Also, she hoards pens and has an oddly specific loyalty to one brand of gummy candy, which she guards like treasure.
