Meet the characters from Death in Paradise

Richard Poole

Oh Richard — the prim, perfectly pressed English detective who looks like he stepped out of a rainy London fog and into a tropical nightmare. He’s all tucked-in shirts, meticulous notebooks, and a deep, tragic love for a proper cup of tea (yes, even in the middle of a Caribbean beach — I know, he complains about the sun but somehow watches the sunset like it’s a secret treat). Brilliant at piecing together clues, hilariously out of place at beach parties, and secretly vulnerable under that stiff collar; also, I swear he once alphabetized a spice rack in his spare time. There’s this wonderful, awkward charm — he’s a rule-book person but occasionally does something wildly compassionate that surprises everyone.

Humphrey Goodman

Absolute heart of gold energy, clumsy in the best way — the man will knock over a plant and solve a murder in the same breath. He’s all awkward smiles, enthusiastic metaphors, and improbable optimism, like he’s trying to hug the world with detective work; and he gets obsessed with tiny details (and biscuits) in this adorable, distracting way. Surprisingly sharp, genuinely kind, and full of goofy enthusiasm, he also has that “I’ll try anything once” vibe that leads to chaotic but effective crime-solving. He’s the sort of person who misplaces his notes but remembers exactly where someone was standing three nights ago — charmingly scatterbrained yet uncanny.

Jack Mooney

Cozy, dad-bear detective: warm, methodical, and a bit of a storyteller who’ll tell you about his cat or a casserole recipe mid-interrogation. There’s this gentle, steady competence — slow to anger, fast to listen — and he collects mugs and tiny souvenirs like they’re trophies of patience (or maybe he just needs more mugs, who knows). He can be hilariously sentimental about small things, but he’s also ruthless with logic when it counts; part adoptive-grandfather, part stubborn sleuth. Honestly, he’s the kind who’ll make you tea, solve a case, and apologize for being late — in that order.

Neville Parker

Sweet, awkward, and neurotically endearing — Neville is that lovable, nervous brain who overthinks everything and then nails the deduction like it was on autopilot. He’s tidy, a little anxious in social settings, and ridiculously earnest about doing the right thing (also maybe collects socks? I could be making that up, but it fits). He grows into confidence in such a slow-burn, adorable way — from jittery rookie to quietly reliable, with odd food habits (very specific sandwiches?) and a tendency to mumble brilliant insights. Sometimes he’s uncomfortably formal, sometimes he’s surprisingly warm; it’s kind of the point, and it’s lovely.

Selwyn Patterson

Selwyn is the island’s quietly authoritative pillar — wise, slightly sardonic, and steeped in local knowledge that makes him indispensable. He’s the steady hand who knows everyone’s business (but would never say), good with a stern look and an unexpectedly dry joke, and he grounds the team with this calm, no-nonsense presence. He loves routine but isn’t afraid to bend rules if it helps people, which makes him both reliable and a little unpredictable if you annoy him. Oh, and he probably has a secret domino collection and a fondness for late-night calypso music — or at least that’s how I picture him.

Catherine Bordey

Big-hearted, loud, and absolutely central to island life — Catherine runs the hub (bar/restaurant/counseling center) and somehow knows the gossip before it happens. She’s maternal in the most chaotic, hilarious way: fierce, protective, and ready to throw a plate at someone who deserves it (or maybe at someone who doesn’t, who can say). She’s brimming with warmth, serves the best comfort food, and gives the kind of blunt advice that somehow cures everything — also, she keeps a secret stash of very fancy biscuits for emergencies. There’s a softness under all the sass that makes her impossible not to love.

Florence Cassell

Florence is sharp, fierce, and annoyingly competent in that delightful way — she’ll sass suspects, stare down liars, and then make you laugh with a single raised eyebrow. She’s principled and brave, sometimes a bit dramatic, and so committed to doing right that she’ll butt heads with anyone (including the DIs) if it means justice gets served. She’s got that cool, razor-tongued exterior but flashes of vulnerability that sneak out at the oddest times — like when she actually likes a cheesy rom-com, shh. Also, sunglasses. Lots of sunglasses.

Jean-Pierre Hooper

JP is the lovable local stalwart — cheerful, a bit cheeky, and full of island wisdom wrapped in jokes and warm smiles. He’s great at read-the-room moments, connects with witnesses in this calm, friendly way, and has surprising patience for paperwork he says he hates (but secretly organizes neatly). Loyal to a fault and always ready with a quip or a tale about his childhood, he’s the kind of colleague you want on stakeout duty because he brings snacks and terrible karaoke. He’s quietly brave, really observant, and probably hums random calypso songs while doing case notes — and yes, that’s oddly comforting.
