Meet the characters from One of Us Is Lying
Addy Prentiss
Addy is the unofficial queen bee who slowly proves she’s more complicated than her hair and designer jeans would let on. She starts off all rules and rehearsed smiles but has this quiet, stubborn streak that shows up when she least expects it — like she’ll suddenly say something sharp and then apologize for being blunt. Loyal to a fault and painfully aware of appearances, she is constantly re-learning who she actually wants to be (also owns an alarming number of lip glosses and maybe that one friendship bracelet she refuses to throw away). Kind of adorably inconsistent: claims to hate drama but will absolutely rewatch the most dramatic teen movie at 2 a.m. and sob into her couch.
Cooper Clay
Cooper is the golden-boy baseball pitcher with a brainy side he hides under varsity jackets and carefully curated smiles. He’s somehow both earnest and painfully awkward about feelings, like he rehearses compliments in the mirror (probably), and also really cares about doing the right thing even when he’s terrified of the consequences. Super driven — nerdy in a quietly nerdy way — and you can tell he keeps a list of goals in his head; also, rumor has it he has a secret obsession with weird indie folk songs, which is cute and slightly tragic. There’s this vulnerability that makes you root for him, even when he misses the obvious emotional cues.
Bronwyn Rojas
Bronwyn is the brainiac who absolutely memorizes the outline of every argument she plans to make and then betrays herself by being unexpectedly brave in the worst moments. Future doctor energy: neat notes, a plan, definitely stressed about deadlines — but also secretly breaks rules sometimes and then blushes about it for a week. She’s pragmatic and moral and annoyingly dependable, but also capable of a wildly dramatic internal monologue that contradicts her calm exterior (she does keep a tiny stack of sticky notes in her jacket, okay?). Kind of the moral center yet not a saint, and she will call you out gently but firmly if you lie.
Nate Macauley
Nate is the classic “troubled kid” with messy loyalty: gruff, defensive, and somehow both dangerous and deeply human. He hates being boxed in — acts like he doesn’t care, but he absolutely does; and yes he probably drinks too much coffee and forgets to eat breakfast but will still show up when it counts. There’s a rough honesty to him that makes him magnetic; he says the blunt thing you were thinking and then surprises you by being protective in ways he won’t explain. Slight contradictions everywhere: tough on the surface, sentimental about small things (like a cracked watch he refuses to replace).
Jake Riordan
Jake looks like the charming, solid ex-boyfriend who always has the right grin and the right words, and then you slowly realize that charm can be used like a shield. He’s confident, sometimes dangerously so, and has this knack for making situations about him — not always malicious, often more like insecurity dressed up as swagger. Probably plays guitar badly but thinks he’s excellent at it, and likes to keep receipts and schedules (neat freak? maybe) which makes him come off organized even when he’s emotionally chaotic. He can be infuriatingly persuasive, and that smile is part of why people forgive him more than they should.
Janae Matthews
Janae is the sharp-tongued best friend who will roast you relentlessly and then show up with soup when you cry — the whole package. She’s blunt, perceptive, and has a zero-tolerance policy for nonsense, but also a soft spot for small injustices and people who try, even if they fail spectacularly. Very practical, very loud, probably owns three jackets with patches and a secretly perfectly curated playlist of angry songs; sometimes contradicts herself by being both cynical and wildly hopeful. She’s the kind of friend who remembers your weird little preferences (like exactly how you take your coffee) and uses that against you in the best possible way.
