Meet the detectives

Sherlock

Sherlock is that dazzling, infuriating genius who will deduce your breakfast from the shoe scuff and then wonder aloud why anyone gets emotional about birthdays. He’s razor-sharp, obsessive, and lazy in weird intervals — like, intense focus followed by utter collapse on the couch (and yes, he sometimes naps with a violin tucked under his arm, don’t ask). He can be cold and astonishingly blunt, but there’s this tiny, unreliable streak of care that sneaks out when you least expect it — he’ll help because it’s a puzzle, or maybe because he actually likes you, hard to tell. Also, he’s terrible at small talk yet inexplicably good at fetching tea when you’re ill, which is both heroic and mildly confusing.

Dr. Watson

Dr. Watson is the warm, steady heartbeat to Sherlock’s lightning — practical, brave, and endlessly patient even when he’s muttering about “that infernal man.” He’s the medical, military, definitely-not-just-a-sidekick type: reliable with a field dressing and a story, the sort of chap who remembers birthdays and also how many men fit in a carriage. He’s got a romantic streak (occasionally sentimental, occasionally rolling his eyes at sentiment), fierce loyalty that sometimes tips into exasperation, and a surprising fondness for neighborhood gossip — the doctor who disapproves also knows all the tea. Often the narrator and moral compass, he’s brave without being showy, and will sometimes leap into danger because someone needs him, which is noble and slightly reckless for a man with a medical bag.
