She built things from nothing and will stare you down with a quiet, slow anger that makes people rearrange their priorities (also she cries at small poems, yes, really). She can be ruthless in boardrooms and soft at home, which is sort of the point, I think — she’s all about survival and love in weirdly equal measures. Little odd detail: she apparently collects teacups but never uses them, except once, maybe, when she was distracted and spilled the tea and then laughed; that might be made up but it feels right.

Edwin Fairley

Edwin Fairley is polished, practiced charm with a hint of restlessness — the sort of man who wears suits like armor and smiles like he’s holding a secret, sometimes a good one and sometimes trouble. He’s clever and persuasive, can read a room in seconds, and yet there’s a string of contradictions: generous with compliments, suspiciously tight with his time, and oddly nostalgic for things he never really had. He gives off the air of someone always a little late to his own feelings, which is both frustrating and kind of magnetic. Also, he has a habit of tapping his pen when thinking — or was it a coin? Either way, it’s endearing and maddening.

He’s fiercely loyal, quick to anger, quicker to defend the people he loves, and ridiculously terrible at hiding a soft spot for puppies and bad poetry (don’t laugh, he cries during weddings). He’s practical, a hands-on sort of soul — fixes things, tells stories, drinks too much tea — and yet he can be surprisingly poetic when he’s not grumbling. Oh, and he swears he hates fancy things but owns one very expensive hat that he refuses to part with; don’t ask how it happened.
