Meet the characters from Night Sky

Irene York

Irene is this quiet storm of a woman who seems gentle until she isn’t — in the best way. She’s the kind of person who remembers everyone’s birthday and also knows where you hid that ridiculous souvenir you thought you’d lost forever, which is both comforting and a little spooky. There’s a long history folded into her smiles, like old maps tucked into a cardigan pocket, and she carries secrets with a soft, almost apologetic pride. She fusses over plants and tea, but will also pick up a wrench and stare down a very inconvenient truth without blinking.

Franklin York

Franklin is stubborn in the most adorably determined way — the sort of guy who loves routines (newspaper at seven, the same soup recipe, you know), but will throw the whole schedule out if something extraordinary shows up. He’s warm, practical, and a tiny bit resentful of being gentle sometimes — like, he wants to be brash but keeps forgetting how. There’s this boyish curiosity under all that retired-man exterior, so he’s equal parts tinkerer and tender, and definitely the kind of person who will fix your door and then make you tea to apologize for the noise. He reeks of steady reliability but also has these flashes of surprising recklessness that make you trust him and worry about him at once.

Jude

Jude is sharp, kind of raw around the edges, and absolutely magnetic in a way she doesn’t try to be — she just is. She’s got a past that peeks out in the wrong moments and a practical sarcasm that masks a real, blinking hope; like, she will roll her eyes but also rescue a moth from a lampshade at 2 AM, because why not. There’s a guarded bravery — quick decisions, quicker loyalty — and she’s messy in the best possible way, leaving crumbs of herself all over other people’s lives.

Byron Albemarle

Byron has that slippery, polished charisma that makes you want to take him at face value and then immediately regret it because there’s always more underneath. He’s the charming antagonist-in-a-tailored-suit type, confident, ruthless when needed, yet annoyingly principled about certain tiny things (he will judge your coffee choice silently, but he’ll also open doors for strangers). He seems composed, but he has these private little rituals that are almost humanizing — I swear I once saw him humming to himself in an empty corridor, which made me weirdly sympathetic for a second. Dangerous? Yes. Fascinating? Absolutely.

Stella

Stella is wildflower energy in a slightly cracked vase — luminous, unpredictable, and somehow both naive and ferociously smart. She laughs like she means it and sometimes she cries like she means that too, and those two things together make her unbearably alive to be around. She’ll pick up a rusty thing and declare it treasure, then surprise you by fixing it with tiny, precise motions you didn’t think she’d know. She’s fragile-ish but not fragile enough to be sidelined; she always bangs right into the center of the action.

Toni

Toni is blunt, funny, and nails-it-all-the-time practical, like your best friend who also happens to be a human survival manual. She says what’s odd and what’s obvious in the same breath, so you either adore her for the truth or pretend not to hear — but mostly you adore her, because she’s loyal and incorruptible in a way that feels rare. There’s a softness she hides behind deadpan one-liners (she collects tiny postcards, don’t ask why), and she has this weird habit of humming under her breath when she’s thinking hard. She’s the glue, often begrudgingly, and yet somehow always the one making trouble.

Denise

Denise is this sardonic, clever presence who keeps the group honest and also a little unsettled, because she asks the questions nobody else wants to hear. She’s simultaneously empathetic and slightly high-strung — the type to plan three contingency plans and then adopt a stray cat at midnight because she couldn’t bear to leave it. She’s sharp as a tack, has opinions (loud ones), and also secret tiny comforts she clings to, like a playlist of songs that make her cry in the shower. Part-scientist, part-guardian, totally unpredictable when emotions get involved, and somehow you always end up trusting her radar.
