Meet the characters from The Orville

Capt. Ed Mercer

Okay, Ed is such a delightfully messy captain — earnest, a little flustered, and stubbornly decent even when he’s clearly winging it (which is often). He wants to be competent and commanding but also trips over his own shoes, metaphorically speaking — surprising depth under the goofiness. Loyal to a fault, always trying to hold the ship together and his personal life apart, which never really goes to plan, ha. He leads with a weird blend of optimism and quiet panic and somehow you believe him every time.

Cmdr. Kelly Grayson

Kelly is the cool, capable backbone who somehow balances diplomacy with “I will punch you if necessary” energy — so intimidating and maternal at the same time. She’s pro-tech but hates bureaucracy, loves kids and snacks (seriously, she has a snack drawer) and will calmly fix a crisis while rolling her eyes. There’s this steady competence but also flashes of impatience, like she genuinely wants things to be better and is tired of waiting. She’s the kind of person who remembers everyone’s birthdays and also knows the best escape route off the ship.

Dr. Claire Finn

Claire is the show’s big-hearted doctor — empathetic, fierce about patient care, and secretly a nerd for medical oddities (her trivia is unhinged, in a good way). She follows protocol until someone’s crying, then rules become suggestions; it’s adorable and infuriating. She is warm but has this exacting professional streak that can get awkward in social settings, like asking too many questions at the wrong time. Also, she probably has an oddly specific tea preference and will bring it to any emergency, which is both practical and hilarious.

Lt. Gordon Malloy

Gordon is the lovable hotshot pilot who never met a one-liner he didn’t love, and he’s somehow both an anxiety bundle and supremely confident in the cockpit. He jokes constantly to hide that he cares too much about being respected — classic: loud exterior, soft interior. He’s competitive, obsessed with flying, and will eat terrible food if it’s free, which says a lot about his priorities. He can be reckless but also has this fierce loyalty, like he’d steal your dog and bring it back with snacks.

Lt. Cmdr. Bortus

Bortus is a walking study in stoic intensity — deadpan, uncompromising, and yet oddly sentimental (did I just cry at that scene where he actually smiled? yes). He follows Moclian rules to the letter but will drop everything for his kid, which breaks the whole “emotionless alien” stereotype in the best way. He says very few words but every one is a dagger or a hug, sometimes both, and his moral center is quietly terrifyingly firm. Also, he has an unexpected hobby — probably woodworking? — I could totally see that.

Lt. Cmdr. John LaMarr

LaMarr is peak brilliant-but-relatable tech genius who was hilariously underrated until he wasn’t, and honestly, beautiful chaotic energy. He’s flashy, loves pop culture flexes, and will nerd out about systems while also taking forever to get out the door (fashionably late, obviously). Under the swagger there’s this meticulous brain that can MacGyver a warp core with a paperclip and a smirk, so don’t be fooled by the jokes. He also sometimes pretends not to care and then spends three hours optimizing the coffee machine — classic.

Isaac

Isaac is the cool, unsettlingly calm Kaylon who is all logic, yes, but also weirdly curious about humans — like a toddler who learned Shakespeare and prefers jazz. He’ll analyze emotions like they’re mathematical problems and sometimes gets it exactly right, other times hilariously misses the point (but in a charmingly earnest way). He’s efficient, alien, and kind of eerie, yet he collects human artifacts like a museum curator with a soft spot. Also: tries humor occasionally, which is either deeply unsettling or deeply sweet depending on the day.
