Has a soft spot for bad jazz and old fountain pens, and yet will never admit to liking anything cute — except maybe stray dogs, but don’t tell him I said that. He’s equal parts temper and principle, which makes him predictably unpredictable, in the best possible way.

Michel Dorn

Michel is the cool, dry brain of the operation — precise, almost surgical in how he thinks, but with a weird streak of sarcasm that sneaks out at the worst moments. He reads crime scene photos like other people read novels, and yes, he actually hums baroque music when he’s trying to focus (I know, how extra). Quiet, observant, a tiny bit of a loner, but he’ll do the weird little favors for teammates no one else notices; he keeps spare umbrellas in his car, for instance. Sometimes he seems emotionless and then suddenly melts into the most tortured empathy, which is confusing but also kind of beautiful.

Arabela Seeger

Arabela is fire with a calm voice — driven, principled, and the one who reminds everyone why they do this job in the first place (cue dramatic speech). She’s empathetic, fierce, and annoyingly good at languages and at reading people; also she’ll rearrange your desk if it bothers her, not aggressively, but with a look that says she will. Carl Hickman

Carl is the lovable wildcard, full of wisecracks and weird snacks in his coat pockets, but don’t let the jokes fool you — he’s sharp as a razor when it counts. Eva Vittoria

Eva is pure intensity and flair — sharp, bold, and the kind of person who will enter a scene like it’s a stage and demand answers like an opera singer demanding applause. She’s meticulous and dramatic, which sounds like a contradiction but it works; she notices tiny details other people miss and then tells a story about them that makes everyone stop. She drinks too much espresso, collects mismatched earrings for reasons she can’t explain, and will silently judge your handwriting (in the nicest way). Fierce protector, terrifyingly competent, and somehow always both vulnerable and unshakeable at once.

Tommy McConnell

Tommy is the rugged, haunted-type who smiles like he’s holding back a storm — broody, charming, and maybe a little broken in the best possible mystery-novel way. He’s brilliant at reading motives and even better at doing the dirty, thankless work no one wants; also terrible at small talk and very good at staring into the distance. Loves crossword puzzles, hates airports (but will fly if necessary), and has this weird ritual of tapping his pen twice before a confession — probably superstition, probably something else. He carries history with him, sure, but he’s also the kind of teammate who will walk straight into danger for someone he barely knows, which is maddening and admirable.
