About Heart of the Beast
Heart of the Beast is a 2026 survival thriller about retired Special Forces veteran James Belmont and his combat dog, Odin, stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. With civilization many miles away, they must draw on his military training to face harsh terrain, dangerous wildlife, and injuries as they fight to survive. Their journey centers on their bond as much as the struggle to reach safety—and Alaska makes no allowances.
Heart of the Beast Character Profiles
James Belmont
James Belmont is a retired Special Forces Command Sergeant Major whose survival skills are tested after a plane crash leaves him and his combat dog, Odin, stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. Guarded and emotionally burdened, James is more at ease with his loyal companion than with other people. He approaches danger with discipline and resourcefulness, but his determination can become self-neglect. His deep affection for Odin reveals the tenderness beneath his controlled, hardened exterior.
Watkins
Watkins is an outgoing stranger James encounters while camping in the Alaskan wilderness. The two talk late into the night, and Watkins leaves James a book with a particular passage highlighted, having taken a beer from his camp in exchange. His role is brief, but his relaxed, grounded manner offers a human point of contact in James’s isolation. Watkins’s small gestures suggest a practical streak and an interest in leaving others with something worth considering.
Amber
Amber enters the story near the end, when she finds Odin on a road after his trek through the Alaskan wilderness. Compassionate and welcoming, she takes the grieving combat dog into her care, offering him a chance at safety after a harrowing ordeal. Her brief appearance shifts the story’s focus from isolation toward the possibility of healing. Amber’s response is simple but consequential: she meets a vulnerable animal with warmth and makes room for him in her life.
