Meet the characters from The Purge
Miguel Guerrero
Okay, Miguel is the kind of guy who looks calm but is actually a volcano — steady voice, hands that never stop fiddling with something (a coin, a watch, a rosary? I can’t remember), and this weirdly soft laugh that will ruin you when he gets angry. He’s protective to a fault, the anchor for whoever’s around him, but also that friend who plans three escape routes and then still forgets his keys. There’s this stubborn honor thing about him; like he’ll argue with you for an hour about what’s right and then do the most reckless thing anyway. Also he cooks terrible eggs but swears they’re gourmet, which I love for him.
Marcus Moore
Marcus is the moral scoreboard of the group — relentless, sharp, and annoyingly principled (in a good way), like he reads manifestos for fun or he should, I don’t know. He argues facts, carries a notepad even when it makes no sense, and holds everyone to standards he sometimes can’t meet himself — very human contradiction alert. He can be furious and heartbreakingly tender in the same scene, which makes him both exhausting and necessary. Oh, and he always drinks coffee that tastes like regret; like, seriously, who keeps a thermos that old?
Jenna Betancourt
Jenna is quietly fierce and somehow calming, like a nurse who also knows how to hotwire a car — simultaneously healing and part of the plan to torch the system (not literally, maybe). She keeps lists, bandages, and regrets, in that order, and her patience is legendary until you test it, then watch out. She has this soft spot for stray animals and conspiracy theories, which makes her adorable and untrustworthy in the best way. Also she hums awful pop songs while sterilizing things, and I’m living for that tiny contrast.
Ryan Grant
Ryan is slippery in the best possible way — suave, opportunistic, full of charm and questionable ethics, like he could sell you a boat while stealing your shoes and you’d still thank him. He loves suits a little too much and has a tendency to flash a smile when things are about to go sideways (which is every five minutes). Deep down he craves loyalty, which he betrays and then tries to buy back with dramatic apologies; not that that ever really works, but he’s dramatic so it’s fun. Also he collects matchbooks and has a tragic backstory about a cat that may or may not be true.
Penelope Guerrero
Penelope is the fire in the family — organizer, emotional triage nurse, and the person who will guilt you into a plan that somehow is brilliant despite everyone swearing they didn’t want to be involved. She’s equal parts diplomat and detonator, which is terrifying and awesome; she can bake and plan a revolt in the same afternoon. She’s fiercely maternal but also petty about small slights, like you don’t want to steal her parking spot or she’ll remember it forever. Small weird detail: she names her plants after ex-lovers and talks to them like it’s totally normal.
Esme Carmona
Esme is chaos wrapped in charisma — salty-tongued, unpredictable, and the one who will break into laughter mid-crisis and you won’t even be mad because she’s right. She’s street-smart to the point of poetry, always three steps ahead and wearing three mismatched earrings that somehow tell a story about her last three bad decisions. She’ll flip loyalties if bored, but also has a soft corner for kids and bad dogs, which redeems her in the vaguest of ways. And yes, she actually cries during rom-coms, huge betrayal incoming when people don’t believe me.
Ben Gardner
Ben is quiet and wrench-handed — the fixer, the dad-type who knows how to mend things (literal and metaphorical) and will give you a lecture about tools you didn’t ask for. He’s gentle but stubborn, the sort who quotes old books and then surprises you by making a joke only he finds funny. There’s a melancholy around him, like he remembers better days and keeps trying to rebuild them brick by brick. Also he does crosswords with a pen and refuses to apologize for it, which is peak Ben.
