Meet the characters from Shadow and Bone
Alina Starkov
Okay, Alina is such a mess of power and vulnerability and I love that — shy cartographer turned literal walking sun, sometimes unsure and sometimes terrifyingly sure, like pick one, Alina! She has this goofy, earnest awkwardness (maps, pencils, probably snacks tucked in her coat) but also this sudden, blinding authority that makes people listen whether they want to or not. She’s stubborn in the sweetest way and also dramatic with her hair — sometimes she wants quiet and tea, sometimes she’s flinging light like it’s confetti. Also low-key hates being the center of attention but will absolutely ruin a plan if someone threatens her friends, like no question.
The Darkling
The Darkling is peak broody, all velvet coats and moonlit intensity, and honestly you’re always waiting for him to either solve everything or ruin everything (sometimes both). He’s charismatic in a slow-burn kind of way — commanding, secretive, always three steps ahead and maybe three steps off the moral map, which is thrilling and terrifying. There’s a loneliness to him that makes him almost poetic, and then he’ll do something awful and you remember he’s also catastrophically selfish, which is wild. He collects secrets like people collect stamps, but he genuinely thinks he’s doing the right thing, or at least that’s his favorite excuse.
Kaz Brekker
Kaz is pure schemer energy — cane, black gloves, sharp tongue, sharper plans; he’ll count coins while planning a heist and also brood over the worst childhood trauma you can imagine. He’s cold on the surface, all business and calculation, but oh man does he have weird soft spots (tiny ones) that he denies with a scowl and a cigar. He hates being touched but also hoards things like letters or stupid tokens, so are those sentimental? maybe. Constantly paranoid, always prepared, and somehow the mastermind everyone grudgingly follows — chaotic, brilliant, and exhausting in the best way.
Malyen Oretsev
Mal is like the solid, reliable arrow to Alina’s flare — stoic, a little jealous, incredibly loyal, and the kind of person who would walk through fire for his friends but then complain loudly the whole time. Practical and grounded, he’s a tracker who loves the outdoors and also wears his emotions on his sleeve when it counts, which is adorable and tragic. He’s got this competitive, stubborn streak (seriously, challenge him to anything) but will also try to be noble and fail spectacularly at admitting he’s scared. There’s a warmth to him under all the scowling, and he has this weird habit of humming when he’s nervous that no one mentions but everyone notices.
Inej Ghafa
Inej is quiet and holy-fire fierce at the same time — graceful, moral, and unbelievably skilled (the Wraith lives up to the name), with this whole “soul of the crew” vibe that makes people stop and listen. She’s deeply religious in her own way and surprisingly pragmatic about dangerous things, which is such a cool contrast — like, calm prayers before doing something very illegal. She says very little but when she speaks it matters, and she has a fondness for small comforts (cookies? cat-people? maybe both), which feels unreasonably human. Also she has absolutely zero chill about injustice, and you do not want to be the person who makes her lose it.
Jesper Fahey
Jesper is glitter and guns — loud, charming, perpetually broke but somehow the life of every dark alley party, always with a grin and terrible puns, sometimes. He’s a compulsive gambler and a fantastic shot; the two things are connected somehow because adrenaline is his favourite seasoning for life. Underneath the jokes he’s kind of a mess (surprising, I know) — insecure, longing for approval, but also fiercely loyal and weirdly tender about the people he loves. He flirts with disaster as casually as he flirts with strangers, but give him a friend in trouble and he’ll risk a nine-figure wager without blinking.
Ivan
Ivan is the big silent type who is more complicated than “big and silent” because he’s also oddly poetic if you catch him on a good day — huge, blunt, loyal to a fault, and the sort of person who will carry you out of a fight and then pretend it was nothing. He’s got this intimidating presence (unless you bring up baking or something small and domestic — then he melts, sort of?) and he’s shockingly bad at subtlety, which is kind of adorable. Not a man of many words but if he says something it’s usually practical and oddly specific, like “bring a rope” or “don’t eat the blue berries.” He’s protective and a tiny bit superstitious, maybe hums old songs when nervous, and definitely has a soft spot for warm coats.
Fedyor Kaminsky
Fedyor is this quietly eccentric type who does his job with an almost absurd level of care — meticulous, a little mysterious, and maybe the person you want on your weird plan team because he’ll notice the tiny, crucial detail. He’s calm to the point of being unreadable sometimes, but also has these sudden flashes of humor or weird hobbies (collecting spoons? naming rats? pick your fave) that make him oddly lovable. He’s loyal in the most practical sense — shows up, fixes problems, and refuses to be dramatic about it, which is its own kind of drama. Also sometimes he contradicts himself for no reason, like claiming to hate the city but secretly knowing all the best alleys, which I appreciate.
Nina Zenik
Nina is the big, loud, warmhearted chaos magnet — emotional, fierce, and full of love (and snacks), the kind of person who will punch you and then give you soup and three heartfelt speeches about family. She’s a Heartrender and a spy, which means she can fight and also put on an elaborate performance, and she enjoys both probably too much. She’s unapologetically herself — flirty, brave, messy with feelings, and oddly maternal, like she collects people and then defends them with a terrifying grin. She also has a taste for the dramatic (songs at odd hours, unsolicited advice) and is somehow both the emotional center and the party planner of any ragtag group.
