Meet the characters from Wheel of Time

Moiraine Damodred

Moiraine is all sharp edges and soft-spoken urgency, the kind of Aes Sedai who seems small until she does something that rearranges everyone’s plans. She loves secrets like some people love gardens — tends them, waters them, then quietly tells you they’re not for you, which is maddening and brilliant. Obsessed with the Pattern and stubborn as a mountain, but she’ll flash a tiny, almost embarrassed smile at something silly (don’t tell anyone I said that). She moves like she’s always half a step ahead and then pretends it was all coincidence; also she has a ring, I think, or am I mixing that up with someone else?

Lan Mandragoran

Lan is the stoic rock who carries a country on his shoulders and looks like a man carved from old stone; also he cries silently at sunsets, maybe. He is scarily competent in every way — swords, silence, grim jokes — and his loyalty is like a blade that never rusts. There’s a melancholy in him that’s almost polite, like he keeps his grief wrapped and labeled in case it wants to be polite too. He is both terrifying and absurdly protective (will glare at tents, horses, you, the wind) and he insists on doing things the hard way because honor, okay?

Egwene Al’Vere

Egwene is fire and curiosity in braid form, all impatient smiles one minute and scheming the next. She wants to learn everything, to be everyone, to be the leader, the rebel, the student — and then she gets it and grins like she won a game she barely remembers signing up for. Sometimes she’s young and reckless, other times she’s terrifyingly grown-up and precise; it’s confusing but wonderful. She’ll fiddle with threads or a book or people’s futures and also probably bite her lip when she’s thinking, which is somehow adorable and slightly dangerous.

Nynaeve al’Meara

Nynaeve is a walking scowl with a healing touch, the kind of person who will lecture you into getting better and then actually fix you. She fusses and tugs her braid like it’s connected to the cosmos and has that ‘I’ll smack you if you cry’ energy — which, yes, is oddly comforting. Her temper could fuel a bonfire, but her heart is stubbornly, infuriatingly kind; don’t trust her until she trusts you, and even then maybe trust cautiously. Also she drinks tea like it’s a weapon and mutters under her breath, both soothing and alarming.

Rand al’Thor

Rand is destiny with a farmer’s accent and a constant migraine, basically the universe’s worst-promoted hero. He alternates between ‘I’m just a simple man’ and ‘I will remold the world,’ often in the same paragraph, which makes him exhausting and magnetic. There’s a brittle loneliness under all the power — he wants normal bread and also to burn the sky, sometimes both before breakfast. He can be sweet and awkward, then terrifying and godlike, and you’re never quite sure which one’s winning today.

Perrin Aybara

Perrin is big, quiet, and permanently smelling faintly of workshop smoke and warm bread — I might be making the bread up but it fits. He’s gentle like an oak and angry like a hammer when he has to be, very slow to move and then surprisingly fast and deadly (wolves help). He has this soft, serious way of thinking about people and trees and axes, and he loves small domestic things even while carrying enormous moral weight. Also he talks to wolves sometimes and apologizes to them? It’s weird and endearing and somehow perfectly him.
