Richard Poole

Richard is this hilariously prim, suit-obsessed inspector who literally looks like he wandered off a London fog into the Caribbean and refuses to accept sunscreen. He’s obsessively proper, loves order, carries a stern eyebrow and an even sterner cup of tea — but also has a soft spot that sneaks out in the worst possible moments. He’s awkward with island life yet secretly brilliant at clues; also apparently allergic to fruit salads but will admonish you about mangoes while somehow knowing everyone’s shoe size. He’s that classic fish-out-of-water with a dry wit and a tendency to keep a notebook of complaints, and honestly you can’t help but root for him.

Humphrey Goodman

Humphrey is the lovable, flustered detective who shows up with a Cheshire grin and about seventeen half-formed theories, bless him. He’s endlessly enthusiastic, a bit clumsy (trips over evidence sometimes — it’s a thing), and has this weirdly brilliant ability to connect tiny, silly details to solve the case. He adores tea but will also binge awkwardly on biscuits at 3 a.m., and he’s the kind of person who apologizes to suspects for interrupting their grief. Also he keeps a map with pins in his desk; it’s kind of his vibe. He’s warm, earnest, and ridiculously optimistic, the person who insists on a group hug after a grim day.

Jack Mooney

Jack is the soft-spoken Irish dad-cop who looks like he runs a bookshop and also builds forensic timelines in his sleep. Gentle, nostalgic, and a little lonely sometimes, he’s ridiculously observant and uses stories and biscuits as interrogation techniques — totally unorthodox but always effective. He’s got this lovely messy heart and terrible jokes, plus a tea habit that rivals Richard’s (no contest), and he somehow knows every family member’s birthday. He feels like a warm cardigan in human form and will probably make you a sandwich while solving the crime.

Neville Parker

Neville is the world’s most awkward pathologist who looks like he’s read one too many medical journals and not enough life. He’s painfully literal, social-anxiety-adjacent, and yet quietly heroic — the kind of person who says the wrong thing and then hands you a perfectly labeled sample with a sheepish grin. He collects niche antiques (I am not joking, possibly a teapot shaped like a bat?) and has bizarre skills like knowing exactly how long a bruise takes to form, which is inconveniently useful. Delightfully nerdy, surprisingly tender, and unafraid to wear socks with sandals if the mood (and the lab heat) strikes him.

Selwyn Patterson

Selwyn is the gloriously bossy, dramatic boss with a heart that’s enormous and a voice that commands a room (and sometimes the radio). He loves paperwork, family lore, and generally knows everyone’s business — he’s like St. Marie’s unofficial mayor and moral compass rolled into one glittery blazer. He’ll complain about modern slang and also host a barbeque with rum cocktails that are suspiciously strong, and I swear he has a secret stash of poetry in his desk. Constantly both exasperating and utterly dependable, he’s the kind of leader you want at family dinners and stakeouts.

Catherine Bordey

Catherine is the warm, no-nonsense café owner who runs a place that is essentially the island’s emotional hub and pastry distribution centre. She’s sharp-tongued in the best way, fiercely protective of her daughter and her community, and has encyclopedic knowledge of gossip and cake recipes (not necessarily in that order). She’ll offer you coffee, a scolding, and advice about whether your new fling is actually your type — and probably bake you a scone while doing it. Maternal but not saccharine, she’s the anchor everyone turns to when things get messy.

Florence Cassell

Florence is the kick-ass detective with a calm exterior and a steel core, and honestly she balances empathy and interrogation like a pro. Practical, smart, and stylishly efficient (she can cuff you and then explain your rights while tying a neat ponytail), she has this annoying habit of being right all the time. She’s deeply loyal — will drop everything for friends — but also has a secret soft spot for tiny, cheesy action movies and possibly a guilty karaoke habit. Cool under pressure but weirdly sentimental about old school photos, she’s the colleague you want by your side when things go sideways. Also, she drinks coffee black and then pretends not to notice how much sugar you put in yours.

Jean-Pierre Hooper

Jean-Pierre (JP!! love him) is the exuberant local copper with the biggest smile and a laugh that fills a room, and he often brings a football metaphor to serious investigations which is honestly kind of great. He’s clever, community-minded, and has a tendency to trade in local folklore and jokes — sometimes while holding a plate of something he swore he wouldn’t eat. He’s unflappable in a crisis, likes to flirt with bureaucracy (politely), and may or may not be secretly running two small businesses on the side. Approachable, chatty, and weirdly philosophical about coconuts, he’s the kind of cop everyone already knows by first name.
