Meet the characters from Behind Her Eyes

Adele Ferguson

Adele is the weird, magnetic, slightly unhinged older woman who steals every scene. She’s both a warm mum and a cold, controlling presence — like someone who bakes you a cake and hides the recipe in a locked drawer. You can feel her loyalty and her simmering resentment in equal measure, and yes she smiles with eyes that know too much. She collects teacups, hums show tunes when nervous (or maybe it’s lullabies? I can never remember), and there’s this persistent sadness that makes her impossibly real.

David Ferguson

David is the polished, charming doctor who always seems two steps ahead — suave but with a shadow. He’s the kind of guy who remembers the name of your childhood pet and also hides things in his bedside drawer, metaphorically and probably literally. He’s warm when he wants to be, cold when he needs to be, and somehow equally protective and possessive. Also he drinks bad instant coffee sometimes? No, wait, maybe he only drinks black espresso — messy brain, but you get the point.

Louise Bardsley

Louise is the workmate/friend who’s tougher than she looks — practical, blunt, and somehow very funny when she’s fed up. She does not have time for nonsense but will binge-gossip if wine is involved, so contradictory in the best way. At times she’s the voice of reason and at others she’s accidentally enabling chaos, which I love because it feels human. Little details: she steals office stationery, knows nine recipes for shepherd’s pie, and always forgets where she put her glasses even when they’re on her head.

Rob Hoyle

Rob is the messy, endearing guy who’s trying to be a decent dad and partner but keeps tripping over his own intentions. He’s loud and soft in the same breath — a bit reckless, sometimes tender, sometimes oblivious, and always kind of raw. He drinks too much beer some nights, sings off-key to kids’ TV songs other nights, and generally wears his heart on his sleeve whether that’s smart or not. He’s the sort of character who makes mistakes you want to shake him about and forgive five minutes later.

Adam

Adam is the quiet, observant younger man who has this low-key intensity like he’s always listening for a secret. He’s soft-spoken but weirdly persistent, the kind of person who notices crumbs on your jumper and also notices your mood. Sometimes he’s painfully awkward, sometimes uncannily brave, and always a little unpredictable — like a cat that chooses when to be affectionate. He keeps small weird collections — buttons? coins? — I can’t decide, but it’s cute and tells you everything you need to know.

Sue

Sue is the down-to-earth, gossip-loving neighbor-type who shows up with cake and opinions and doesn’t care who knows either. She is kind and nosy in equal measure, the human equivalent of a warm blanket and a loud knock on the door. She sees the small mechanics of households — who’s angry, who’s lying, who burned the roast — and she tells you in the bluntest possible way. You want her at your dinner party because she brings biscuits and somebody to call you out when you’re being dumb.

Sophie

Sophie is the bewildered, earnest new mum type who’s trying to keep everything together while life quietly unravels around her. She’s curious, kind, and slightly naive, like someone who thinks good manners can fix awkward situations — bless her. She’s practical in a chaotic way: buys the right pram, loses her keys in the same purse, and has a notebook with scribbled plans that she never follows. There’s a steel to her though, an undercurrent of stubbornness that surfaces when it matters, and you’ll start out pitying her and end up rooting for her. Oh and she has a weird thing about mismatched socks, which I love and also don’t know if it was in the show or just my headcanon.

Laura

Laura is the quietly complicated presence — patient, slightly aloof, with a smile that doesn’t always reach her eyes. She’s diplomatic to a fault, the person who smooths over arguments and thinks three steps ahead about feelings, even when she’s exhausted. There’s a reserve about her, like she’s cataloguing moments for later use, which makes her both comforting and a little unknowable. Also she collects postcards for reasons that are probably sentimental and maybe a touch secretive, and that feels very Laura.
